Appliances
ELASTICS (Rubber bands)
What are they for?
Elastics are force mechanisms that are used to move teeth in various directions.
How often do I wear them?
Elastics should be worn at all times, except when eating, unless directed otherwise. If the elastics are not worn as directed, TREATMENT TIME WILL INCREASE!
How often should I change them?
Elastics should be changed following each meal, but no less than 3 times per day. The reason for changing them is because the elastics become “worn out” if not changed and then are not effective.
Will they make my teeth hurt?
Your teeth may become sore at first, but this will diminish in about 2 days.
Expander
What is it for?
To expand the roof of the mouth.
How does it work?
Expands the roof of the mouth by turning a key the recommended number of turns.
What can I expect?
It usually takes 5-7 days to get adjusted to the appliance (eating, swallowing, talking and chewing). You can expect some pressure on the roof of your mouth, bridge of the nose and occasional headache. A space may occur between the two front teeth. This space will close on its own, usually before the next appointment.
HERBST
What is it for?
Primarily to correct overbites.
How does it work?
It corrects the overbite by promoting jaw growth.
What can I expect?
It usually takes 5-7 days to get adjusted to the appliance (eating, swallowing, talking, and chewing). It may be frustrating, but once you are use to the appliance, you won’t even know it is there. If braces are on the teeth, the teeth may become uncomfortable.
Are there problems that occur with the appliance?
Seldom, problems may occur (bent pistons, loose screws, and separating sleeves and pistons). They can generally be taken care of by using your repair kit that we have provided.
How long will I wear the herbst?
Approximately 10-12 months.
RETAINERS
What is it for?
Your teeth have been moving continuously during your treatment. They will have the potential of moving back when the braces are removed. Therefore, our policy is that retainers must be worn for a lifetime.
How often do I wear it?
Initially, it is important that you wear your retainer all the time / night time / as prescribed. You may take it out to eat.
How do I clean it?
The retainer can be cleaned with toothpaste and your toothbrush.
What happens if I don’t wear it?
If the retainer is not worn, it is possible that your teeth will move back to where they were before treatment started. BRING RETAINER IN TO EACH APPOINTMENT.
